I am honored and excited to join Eagle Lake Elementary as principal this year. For the past 11 years, I served as principal at Monroe Elementary. I love being part of Mankato Area Public Schools and look forward to working with the incredible staff, awesome students, and supportive families that make Eagle Lake such a special place.
Originally from the St. Louis, Missouri area, I moved to Minnesota to attend Bethel University, where I earned my degree in Elementary Education. I began my teaching career in Spring Lake Park Schools, teaching 5th grade for two years, and then spent five years teaching 6th grade in Robbinsdale Area Schools. During that time, I earned my Master’s degree and principal license from Saint Mary’s University. I then served in administrative roles in Robbinsdale and Bloomington for seven years before becoming principal at Monroe in the 2014–15 school year.
When I’m not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors, and watching sports. My wife, Kim, was an elementary PE teacher for nearly 20 years before stepping away from the profession to be home more and explore new opportunities. We have two daughters: Chloe and Elsie.
Chloe will be a first-year student at Concordia University, St. Paul, where she’ll play on the women’s lacrosse team. She’s a talented athlete and singer—but even more importantly, a kind and thoughtful person. We’re excited to see where her next chapter takes her. Elsie will be a junior in high school this fall. She enjoys volleyball and lacrosse and stays busy balancing school, travel sports, and work. With just two years of high school left, we’re soaking in the moments and looking forward to what lies ahead for her.
I hope you have a great school year! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, celebrations, concerns, or ideas. You can always email me at sjohan1@isd77.org or call the school office at 507-207-3530. If you’d prefer to talk in person, just let me know—we can find a time to connect.
I’m looking forward to working with you and supporting your student for a successful year at Eagle Lake!
